Cadfael is a very religious guy. More religious then most, if not all, of the other characters and certainly more religious then me, the mun who plays him. But he's also very practical (being Welsh and a former soldier) and has certain modern (as we might call them) sensibilities.
Cadfael is not a priest. He will not take it upon himself to act as a priest in the absence of one. To even consider it would be hubris that he just doesn't have. Also, if I had wanted to play a priest, I would have apped one.
I just wanted to put that out there. He's not going to try and 'convert' or 'witness' to anybody. He speaks the way he speaks and does what he does because that's his vocabulary and the way he views the world. Unless you ask him specifically about or for something having to do with religion, he has a very laissez fair attitude towards the state of the faith of others. It's just not his job.
That's not to say he doesn't care about the state of the souls of others, but he knows better then anybody that each person's journey is their own.
